Ghana still has its clothes made rather than bought, for anything that matters — funerals, weddings, church, Friday wear, school uniforms. That keeps a very large number of tailors and seamstresses working.
It is also the trade where location matters least and reputation matters most. People will cross Accra for a tailor who finishes well and delivers on time.

Where it works
Moderate footfall, cheap premises, and a market with money to spend on making clothes. The checker weights it that way.
But be honest: much of this trade runs from a room at home with Instagram and WhatsApp as the shopfront, and that is a perfectly good way to start with no rent advance at all.
The seasons are the business
The year is not flat. It is:
- December, which is weddings, funerals, church and homecoming at once.
- Easter and Christmas, for church clothes.
- Funeral season, which is every weekend and is the steady base of the trade.
- August and September, for school uniforms.
Plan cash around this. A tailor who spends December’s money in January has no fabric float for Easter.

What builds the reputation
- Finishing. Seams, hems, linings. It is the whole difference.
- Keeping the delivery date. The most common complaint about Ghanaian tailors, by a wide margin, and therefore the easiest way to stand out.
- Measuring properly, and writing it down. Keep a measurement book by customer name; repeat orders then take minutes.
- Photographing every finished piece. That is your catalogue and your Instagram.
The fabric belongs to the customer
Most Ghanaian tailoring is done on cloth the customer bought. Cutting it wrong means replacing it, and a metre of good wax print is not cheap. Measure twice, and never cut a customer’s cloth to guess a style.

- Register the business with the ORC.
- Business operating permit, if you take premises.
- SSNIT for staff. Be clear who is an apprentice and who is employed, because the trade blurs it constantly.
