A creche is a business where the regulation is the point, not an obstacle. You are being trusted with other people’s small children, and the requirements exist because that trust has been broken before.
Treat registration as the first step rather than the last.
What it costs to start
Roughly ₵15,000 to ₵80,000, which is more than most trades on this site because premises and staff come before the first fee is collected.

Where it works
This is the one trade on the site where the age structure of the district is the whole question. You want children under five and parents who work away from home.

The paperwork, which is not optional
- Department of Social Welfare registration for a childcare facility. This is the central one.
- District assembly business operating permit and environmental health clearance.

- Fire service inspection.

- SSNIT for every member of staff.
Ratios and supervision are the whole job
The number of adults per child, and never leaving a child unsupervised, is what the inspection is really about. Understaffing a creche to protect a margin is the one economy that can end the business and worse.
The economics
- Fees are collected termly or monthly, and late payment is chronic. Have a written policy and apply it.
- Staff cost is most of the cost, and it is fixed whether the child turns up or not.
- Occupancy is the number that matters. Places filled against places available, tracked weekly.
- The long vacation is a cash flow hole. Plan for it in term one.
- Parents choose on trust, not price. Cleanliness, the staff, and whether their child is happy at collection.

What closes creches
- A safety incident. Everything else is recoverable; this is not.
- Failing inspection and closing while it is fixed.
- Staff turnover, which parents notice immediately.
- Fees uncollected, staff still owed.
