Phone repair is one of the few trades where being next to your competitors is an advantage. Repair clusters draw people who have a broken phone and no idea who to trust, and the cluster itself is the reassurance.
That inverts the usual advice about avoiding competition.
What it costs to start
Roughly ₵3,000 to ₵15,000.

Where it works
Commercial density beats residential density for this trade, and a cluster beats a quiet street. The checker weights it accordingly.
Then go to where phones are already repaired and ask what a bench costs. A shared table inside a cluster usually beats your own shop nowhere.
The skill, and being honest about it
Two very different trades share the name:
- Parts swapping — screens, batteries, charging ports. Learnable in weeks, competitive, thin margins, high volume.
- Board-level repair — diagnosing and reworking the logic board. Takes years, has far less competition, and commands real prices.
The second is where the money is, and it is a genuine apprenticeship.

Parts, which decide everything
- Original, aftermarket or refurbished — know which you are fitting and tell the customer. A cheap screen that fails in a month costs you the customer and the rework.
- Buy from the same supplier until they extend credit and take returns.
- Hold stock only for the commonest models. Capital in slow parts is dead.
- Price the diagnosis, or you will spend your day advising for free.
The paperwork
- Register the business with the ORC.
- Business operating permit from the assembly.
- Keep a job book — device, fault, customer, price agreed, date. This settles disputes and is the only defence against “that is not the phone I gave you”.
Handling stolen phones
A trade that unlocks and resells handsets brushes up against stolen goods constantly. Record IMEIs and the seller’s Ghana Card for anything you buy. A shop known for handling stolen phones acquires a reputation with the police that outlasts the trade.
What closes repair shops
- A repair that goes wrong on an expensive phone, with no agreement about liability.
- Capital locked in parts nobody needs.
- Being the cheapest, which is a race the cluster always wins.
- No records, then a dispute you cannot win.
