A salon is a bigger business than a barbershop in every sense: higher ticket, longer appointments, more equipment, more staff, and one hard dependency that decides whether you can trade at all.

Water. A salon that cannot wash hair is not a salon.

Where it works

Salons want spending power more than raw footfall, because the ticket is large and people will travel for a stylist they trust. That points at different districts from a barbershop.

Much of this trade never sees a shop

A great many Accra stylists braid at home or travel to the client, with Instagram as the shopfront. That model has almost no startup cost and no rent advance, and it is the sensible way to build a following before signing a lease.

The paperwork

  • Register the business with the ORC.
  • Business operating permit from the assembly.
  • Environmental health clearance — same inspection regime as barbershops, for the same reasons.
  • SSNIT for staff, and be clear who is an employee and who is an apprentice.

The economics

Braiding is priced by style and hours, not by the plait. The trade runs on:

  • Chair utilisation. An empty chair on a Tuesday is the whole problem.
  • Appointment discipline. Overbooking loses customers permanently; walk-in only leaves you idle.
  • Retail attach. Selling the products you just used is where the margin is.
  • Season. December, Easter, funerals and weddings carry the year. Save through them.

What closes salons

  1. No water, followed by buying it by the tanker until the margin is gone.
  2. Power, for the dryers.
  3. The stylist leaving and taking the clients. Same as barbering, worse, because the ticket is bigger.
  4. Stock money spent on something else, then no relaxer on a Saturday.
