Districts too varied for one band to mean much

In these, the difference between one neighbourhood and the next inside the same assembly is larger than the gap between two bands.

Six new regions were created by referendum in December 2018, taking Ghana from ten to sixteen.

Culture

• Artists Alliance Gallery — Three floors of Ghanaian art on the Labadi shore.
• Arts Centre — Crafts, textiles and hard bargaining, near Independence Square.
• National Museum of Ghana — Archaeology, ethnography and art, in a listed 1957 rotunda.
• National Theatre — The sail-shaped 1992 theatre, home to the national dance, drama and symphony companies.
• Nubuke Foundation — Contemporary Ghanaian art, in East Legon.

Education

• Accra Technical University — Technical and vocational higher education in the centre of town.
• Achimota School — Founded 1927, and one of the most consequential schools in West Africa.
• GIMPA — Public administration, law and business, at Achimota.
• UPSA — The University of Professional Studies, strong on accountancy and business.
• University of Ghana, Legon — Ghana's oldest and largest university, founded 1948.

Government

• Accra Metropolitan Assembly — The assembly for central Accra, and one of 29 in the region.
• Bank of Ghana — The central bank. It regulates banks, forex bureaux and mobile money.
• Ghana Immigration Service — Visas, residence permits and work permits.
• Jubilee House — The seat of government and the President's office.
• Parliament House — Where Ghana's 276 members of parliament sit.
• Supreme Court of Ghana — The apex court, and the seat of the Judicial Service.

Health

• 37 Military Hospital — Military hospital that treats civilians, and a major trauma centre.
• Korle Bu Teaching Hospital — Ghana's largest hospital and its main teaching hospital, founded 1923.
• Ridge Hospital — The Greater Accra Regional Hospital, rebuilt and expanded in 2017.
• UG Medical Centre — A newer teaching hospital on the Legon campus.

Markets and shopping

• Accra Mall — The first modern mall in Ghana, at the Tetteh Quarshie interchange.
• Agbogbloshie — Scrap, electronics and the Konkomba yam market.
• Kaneshie Market — A vast covered market west of the centre, strongest on food.
• Kantamanto Market — One of the world's largest second-hand clothing markets.
• Madina Market — The market for the northern suburbs, busiest at the weekend.
• Makola Market — Central Accra's market. If it is sold in Ghana, it is sold here.
• West Hills Mall — The largest mall in the country, out at Weija.

Monuments and memorials

• Black Star Gate — The Independence Arch at the head of Black Star Square.
• Independence Square — Black Star Square. Parades, state occasions, and a great deal of open concrete.
• Jamestown Lighthouse — The lighthouse over old Accra, and the best view of Ga Mashie and the fishing harbour.
• Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park — Nkrumah's mausoleum and museum, on the ground where he declared independence in 1957.
• Osu Castle — Christiansborg. Danish slave fort, then colonial seat, then the seat of government until 2013.
• Ussher Fort — A 1649 Dutch fort in Ga Mashie, later a colonial prison.

Coast and green space

• Achimota Forest — A protected forest reserve inside the city, and a long-running political argument.
• Ada Foah — Where the Volta meets the sea, at the eastern edge of the region.
• Bojo Beach — Reached by a short boat across the lagoon, which is half the appeal.
• Kokrobite Beach — An hour west, and the closest thing Accra has to a beach village.
• Labadi Beach — La Pleasure Beach. Busiest on Sundays and public holidays.
• Sakumono Ramsar Site — A protected coastal wetland between Accra and Tema, and important for birds.
• Shai Hills Reserve — Baboons, antelope and caves, an hour up the Akosombo road and still in the region.

Transport

• Achimota Terminal — A major northern transport hub and market.
• Kotoka International Airport — Ghana's main airport, and about twenty minutes from most of Accra outside rush hour.
• Kwame Nkrumah Circle — Circle. The interchange, the lorry station and the electronics market all at once.
• Port of Tema — Ghana's main port. Almost everything imported arrives here.
• Tema Station — A central trotro terminal, despite the name being in Accra.

Where this comes from

Nothing here is drawn by hand or remembered. The boundaries are real, the constituency list is checked against its own source, and every landmark coordinate was looked up rather than guessed.

• Region and district boundaries — geoBoundaries, which carries Ghana's districts from the Ghana Statistical Service and its regions from OpenStreetMap. CC BY 4.0.
• District capitals and constituencies — the Wikipedia list of parliamentary constituencies, which reproduces the Electoral Commission's tables. The build refuses to publish unless every region's constituency count matches that article's own summary table, and unless all 34 Greater Accra seats land on a district.
• Landmark coordinates — OpenStreetMap contributors, ODbL. Two places that belong on this list are missing because OpenStreetMap has no record to point at, and a guessed coordinate is worse than an absent one.
