Vehicles are charged differently from other goods in two ways that matter: duty follows engine capacity and fuel, and anything over 10 years old carries an overage penalty that steps up sharply with age.

Duty by engine capacity

The lines fall in different places for petrol and diesel, so the same engine size can pay a different rate depending on what it burns.

The overage penalty
Counted from the year of manufacture, on the CIF value:
