Ghana has a large and long-established higher education sector. The University of Ghana at Legon opened in 1948, nearly a decade before independence, and the country’s universities have supplied much of West Africa’s professional class since.
The public universities
University of Ghana, Legon — the oldest and largest, in Accra. Strong across the humanities, social sciences, law, business and medicine. The Legon campus is a small city.
KNUST, Kumasi — Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. The engineering, science and architecture school, and fiercely proud of it.
University of Cape Coast — historically the teacher-training university, now broad, on a spectacular stretch of coast.
UPSA (Professional Studies), GIMPA (Management and Public Administration), UHAS (Health and Allied Sciences), UENR, UDS in the north, and the technical universities that were formerly polytechnics.
Fees for a Ghanaian student on a regular programme run roughly ₵2,000 to ₵8,000 a year, varying sharply by programme — medicine and engineering cost more than the humanities. Accommodation is extra and, at Legon especially, scarce and hotly contested.
Fee-paying and parallel programmes cost considerably more than the regular subsidised route and are how many students get in with a weaker aggregate.
The private universities
Ashesi (Berekuso, and internationally well regarded for its liberal arts and engineering model), Central, Valley View, Pentecost, Regent, Lancaster Ghana, Webster Ghana, Academic City and many more.
Fees start around ₵12,000 a year and climb steeply.
Private universities generally offer smaller classes, more reliable academic calendars — public universities lose time to strikes with some regularity — and better facilities. Public universities generally carry more prestige with Ghanaian employers, with Ashesi the clear exception.
All degree-awarding institutions must be accredited by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC). Check accreditation before paying anyone. It is a public register.
Admission
For Ghanaian applicants, admission turns on WASSCE aggregate: the sum of your best six subjects, core and elective. Lower is better.
- Cut-off aggregates vary by programme and by year. Medicine, law, engineering and pharmacy are the most competitive.
- Applications open through each university’s own portal, usually early in the year for a September start.
- Mature student entry exists for applicants over 25 with work experience, through an entrance exam and interview. It is a genuine and well-used route.
- Holders of A-Levels, IB or foreign qualifications apply through international admissions with equivalency assessment.
National Service follows graduation: a year of assigned placement, at a modest allowance, administered by the National Service Scheme. It is compulsory for Ghanaian graduates and is often a route into a first job.
Studying as a foreign national
International students pay fees in dollars — from roughly $2,000 a year at a public university, which is inexpensive by international standards.

Is a Ghanaian degree portable?
Within Africa, and particularly within ECOWAS, yes. Legon and KNUST are recognised names.
Beyond it, it depends on the field and the receiving institution. Professional qualifications — medicine, law, engineering, accountancy — are governed by the regulator in the destination country, and most require additional examination or supervised practice regardless of where you trained.
For postgraduate study abroad, a good degree from Legon, KNUST or Ashesi is taken seriously. Get your transcripts and certificates while you are still in the country and can walk into the registry; obtaining them later from abroad is a well-known ordeal.
