For a great many Ghanaians abroad, the morning show from home is the sound of the day starting. It is also the fastest way to know what everyone at home is talking about, in the language they are talking about it in.

The time difference

Ghana is on GMT all year and does not change its clocks. So the Accra morning show is on:

  • In the UK and Ireland, at the same time in winter, and an hour later on your clock in summer
  • In most of Western Europe, an hour later in winter and two in summer
  • On the US East Coast, four or five hours earlier on your clock, which puts the Accra breakfast shows in the middle of your night
  • In the Gulf, three or four hours later

Anything live - the news, a phone-in, a football commentary - is live in Accra time.

How much data it uses

Most of these streams run at 128 kbps, which is about 58 MB an hour. An hour a day for a month comes to roughly 1.7 GB. On home broadband that is nothing. On a mobile plan with a data cap, it is worth listening on wifi.

Stopping a station stops the data. The player on this site closes the connection when you press stop, rather than quietly carrying on in the background.

Keeping it on while you do other things

  • Pop it out. The Pop out button opens the player in its own small window, so it keeps playing while you use the rest of the site, or anything else.
  • On a phone, the controls appear on your lock screen and respond to your headphone buttons, so you can put the phone away.
  • Next and previous on your headphones or lock screen step through the stations, like changing the dial.

If a station will not play

Radio streams go down - a transmitter fails, a server is overloaded, a station changes provider - and the player says so plainly rather than spinning for ever. If one will not play:

  1. Try another station. If none play, the problem is at your end.
  2. Check whether your network blocks streaming. Office and school networks often do.
  3. Try the station’s own website, linked from each station on the player. A station that has moved its stream will have the new one there first.

The streams on this site are checked every few months, and one that stops answering is taken off rather than left looking broken.
