A deep red cold drink made from dried hibiscus flowers, steeped with ginger, pineapple, cloves and other spices, and sweetened.

Called bissap elsewhere in West Africa and zobo in Nigeria.

It is the default non-alcoholic offer at Ghanaian events, sold in bottles by roadside vendors and made at home in large quantities. Sharp, gingery and genuinely refreshing in Accra heat.

Other Ghanaian drinks worth knowing: asaana (fermented corn), palm wine, and akpeteshie, the distilled spirit, which is approached with respect.
