A fraudster convinces a network - or someone inside one - to reissue your number on a SIM they hold. Your handset loses service, and every one-time password for your bank, your MoMo wallet and your email starts arriving on their phone instead.

The tell is your phone going dead for no reason, especially if you are still in a place with coverage and other phones work. That is not a network fault until you have proved it is.

What to do, in this order:

  1. Use another phone to call your network immediately and have the number blocked.
  2. Call your bank and your mobile money provider and freeze the accounts.
  3. Change the password on the email address your accounts recover through.
  4. Report it to the police and get a reference.

SIM registration against a Ghana Card has made this harder than it was. It has not made it impossible.
