The word Ghanaians use for the rolling power cuts that have recurred in waves for decades. In a bad period a load-shedding timetable circulates and areas lose power on a rota; in a good one you get occasional unplanned outages like anywhere else.
Causes have included generation shortfalls, fuel supply problems, low water levels at the Akosombo dam, and the state of the transmission grid.
The practical defences: charged power banks, rechargeable lamps, surge-protected extension boards, and for those who can afford it an inverter or a generator.
Dumsor is also a political word. Governments are judged on it.
