The National Health Insurance Scheme, established under the National Health Insurance Act 2012 (Act 852).
Registration and annual renewal cost very little, and membership is linked to your Ghana Card. Children, the elderly, pregnant women, SSNIT contributors and pensioners are exempt from premiums.
It covers most common conditions at accredited facilities, including malaria, maternity care and chronic disease management. It does not cover dialysis for chronic renal failure, most cancer treatment, or medicines off the NHIS list.
A new membership takes 90 days to activate, so registering after you fall ill does not work. That is deliberate.
