The voluntary third tier of Ghana’s pension system.

Contributions are deductible against income tax up to 16.5% of basic salary, which means a cedi into Tier 3 costs you less than a cedi of take-home pay. If your marginal PAYE rate is 17.5% or higher, this is the most straightforward tax reduction available to a salaried person in Ghana.

Money generally has to remain in the scheme for a qualifying period to keep the tax benefit; withdrawing early can trigger a charge.

Tier 3 is also the main route for self-employed people, who fall outside the two mandatory tiers entirely and for whom nobody is deducting anything.
